Afraid of Twitter?

You shouldn’t be afraid of twitter, but if you are, take a baby step internally with Yammer.

Yammer is a tool for making your organization more productive through the exchange of status updates and group messages.

You can use Yammer to:

  • Stay connected with co-workers
  • Start a discussion
  • Share news, documents and links
  • Ask or answer questions
  • Create a group mailing list
  • Look up a co-worker’s contact info
  • Search for a topic
  • See what’s popular and who’s influential

For now, Yammer is free for all users. Companies can pay for optional administrative tools, security features, and data ownership. The cost is $1 per employee per month, after a 30-day free trial period.

Have fun! Start yammering.

Dang. We’re never going to get any work done.

A novel idea: Innovate at YOUR place.

Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana did it. Why can’t you?

With a dedicated budget of up to 1% of annual revenues, Philip Newbold, CEO leads the first community hospital in the US with a dedicated innovation budget. Since implementing Newbold’s innovation initiative, reported related operating profits are as much as three times the hospital’s annual investment.

Very clearly stated on the hospital’s website, “everyone and everybody within Memorial is expected to participate fully in making innovation a core competency” with the goal to see outcomes in:

- Operational and Product Line and Customer Service Differentiation
- New business Start-Ups and New Revenue Sources
- New Innovations in the Community that Create Health and Improve the Quality of Life

Of particular interest to me, and perhaps the easiest for you to execute: Memorial’s Innovation Cafe.

Mr. Newbold converted a nearby out-of-business deli into a brainstorming venue. His staffers and even other business leaders can use the cafe, outside patio and innovation menu to boot, as a place to learn to innovate. While you probably don’t have the financial resources to buy a nearby restaurant, I’m betting there’s an unused room somewhere on your campus that could be made a little less boring – if you’re willing to be, well, a bit more innovative.

To read more about Memorial’s Innovation Cafe, see Joann S. Lublin’s article that appeared in the 9/2/008 edition of the Wall Street Journal.

One of my favorite websites.

Why aren’t we all bold enough to have a single page website?

Take a look.

Kudos to the folks at Puremedia in Brisbane. You have my utmost respect.

Men Wearing Pantyhose? Wish We’d Thought of That.

Not already convinced that we live in a weird, weird world? Then take a look at this story in today’s Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The headline: “More Men Are Getting a Kick Out of Pantyhose.” My response? Go for it, dudes! Wear them to work, wear them to play, wear them to bed, wear them all around the clock. I couldn’t be more supportive.

But has anyone bothered to tell you about the health risks? (And no, I’m not talking about the big hairy Harley guys you might encounter in the men’s room. Although I’d love to be a fly on that particular wall.)

I’m talking about diseases with acronynomic names like PLAW, CR, and DCC. None of those were mentioned on the packaging, were they? Why? Because the Surgeon General didn’t care when women were in the majority of the Pantyhose-Wearing Public.

Maybe that will change soon. But until then, here’s what you need to know about the very real health hazards posed by pantyhose:

PLAW: Short for “permanent line around waist.” It’s the deep, imbedded mark around your midsection that appears when you remove the pantyhose. It’s painful, unsightly, and semi-permanent. The more you wear pantyhose, the worse PLAW can get.

CR: More popularly known as “crotch rot.” You see, pantyhose are made from synthetic fibers that “hold on” to the body’s humidity in your nether region. The symptoms are too gross to include here. Let’s just say that “crotch rot” is never a pleasant experience for the wearer, and rarely for others in close proximity.

DCC: This is the big one: “Diminished Creative Capacity.” It’s a fact proven by millions upon millions of women: You can’t be truly creative in pantyhose. Don’t believe me? Then I challenge you to a game of Charades or any other test of imagination, speed, and creativity. You’ll lose. It would be like fighting with one hand behind your back – or more accurately, a vise around your you-know-whats.

Of course, I don’t expect Men Who Wear Pantyhose to take my warning to heart, much less to their lower region. No doubt you need to find out for yourself why women don’t wear the darn things anymore.

When you do, feel free to lodge a complaint with the Surgeon General.

Here’s to you, Budweiser.

What a way to end the July 4th weekend.  While watching a little mindless television last night before nodding off, I had the pleasure of seeing a great TV spot/PSA. It’s called “Applause” and it’s a simple, yet powerful, tribute to America’s armed forces.

After a little research, I learned that spot originally aired during the 2005 Super Bowl and up until this year had only run on network tv twice. Anheuser-Busch donated the air time to the USO to help improve awareness of the organization — and perhaps more important — to thank our troops for their service.

See the spot yourself. Vist the USO’s website.

No matter your position on the Iraq “Conflict,” remember to ”applaud” the guys and gals who are serving for the rest of us.

As for producing and airing the spot, “wish we’d thought of that.”
